Rehabilitation of Communal Riots’ Victims

Since independence, the country witnessed series of communal riots including those of Jabalpur (1961) Raurkela, Jamshedpur and Kolkata (1964) Ranchi (1967) Karimganj (1968) Ahmedabad (1969, 1985, and 2002) Bhiwandi (1970) Aligarh (1978) Jamshedpur (1979) Moradabad (1980) Nellie (1983) Gujarat (2002) Assam Bodoland (2012) Muzaffarnagar (2013). The Muslim suffered heavy loss of life and property in them.

In the wake of every incident, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind undertook relief work for sufferers which included care of those wounded, relief and rehabilitation of the uprooted. Several riots victims’ colonies were constructed under the aegis of the Jamiat for the benefit of the displaced victims in the country. Besides that the organisation contested lawsuits by forming legal aid committees.
